A Return on Social Investment

In total, S4L families, (verified by United Way consultants) have delivered $5.6 million to the Houston economy in increased wages, taxes, social security payments, and net worth with a Social Return on Investment of $14.65 for each dollar "invested" in the program since 2005.

Introductory Workshops

Skills For Living provides a selection of workshops to employers, community groups, NPOs, PTAs/PTOs, schools, church groups and other interested parties. Our workshops help individuals realize that it is never too late to reverse negative patterns and that they are not alone in experiencing financial difficulties. A recent survey by the FDIC showed that 23% of adults earning more than $100,000 per year could not raise $2,000 in 30 days should they need it. If even high-earners have difficulty managing money, imagine the odds stacked against those who aren’t compensated at nearly the same level.

Our attendees rate our adult programs as "excellent". If you have a dream and want to do something about it or have a group who may need new direction, please contact us to explore the possibilities. All S4L adult programs are free.

Adult Comprehensive Workshops

Our comprehensive workshops help attendees gain a deeper understanding of specific subject areas than our more generalized financial literacy events. Attendees leave our workshops empowered to ask themselves the right questions and make educated decisions.

We offer three courses, each 27 hours in length, across flexible schedules for participants juggling family and work needs. The following workshops are held in a variety of Houston-area locations with the help of collaborators during daytime hours, evenings, and on weekends.

  • Do You Want a Career or a Job? — Most people work hard, but not necessarily smart. If you ask the average worker if he loves his job, the answer is typically negative. Like most individuals, our participants express desire to feel valued on the job and have their employers reward their contributions. To reach that goal, we help participants who are under-utilized at work develop business cases for promotions. For participants seeking employment, we help them assess their abilities and market their strengths to prospective employers. This program will challenge common assumptions about how to obtain (and succeed in) fulfilling and challenging positions. Our clients get results: graduates of the program increase their income an average of more than $8,000 per year.
  • How Do I Achieve Financial Security? — Finances are complex and what you don’t know can cost you substantially. This workshop provides comprehensive financial education covering topics from banking services to taxation. We help participants organize their finances and start saving for life events. Graduates of this program increase their net worth by more than $9,000 on average.
  • How Do I Build Assets & Wealth? — What type of car I afford? Am I ready to buy a home? What types of insurance do I need? How do I plan my estate? Most people have plenty questions about how to handle their assets, and we help our participants get answers to these and other questions in this exciting course. This workshop is designed for those on the brink of a major purchase. We explore each option with our attendees and help prevent buyer’s remorse.
